Of course when you are young, you think that you are falling for your best friend but soon move on when you discover that he/she is not interested. I don't know how many times that has happened to both of us throughout the years. After hearing stories from each other about this subject, we have discovered that it has happened more times than either of us knew about.
In high school, we were still the best of friends, but we started running in different circles. Both of us dated other people all throughout high school but we never truly dated each other. We thought that we should give dating a try but after a few days, both of us felt the impression that it wasn't right for us. That was a very discouraging experience for me. I had felt that I had been in love with Shelby for the longest time and then to feel like it wasn't right was almost heartbreaking. I kept wondering, "Would I ever get my chance with him?" I had watched him date so many girls just wondering when it would be my turn. After graduation, we both went our separate ways, he went to basic training for the military and then on a mission to Vancouver, B.C., Canada and I went to college at BYU-Idaho.
I spent the next two years studying history, hanging out with new friends, and loving the college life! About six months into Shelby's mission, I got a message from him on Facebook that went a little something like this..."Did you die?! Why haven't you written to me at all? I hope I get a letter from you soon!" As soon as I saw that message, I immediately started writing. For the next year and a half, I would receive an email from him every week and I would respond. About a month before he came home, he sent me an email that said he had strong feelings for me and wanted to date me when he got back.
I had previously moved back in to my parent's house so we ended up living three blocks apart again when he came home from his mission. We started off the best of friends again and soon after started dating seriously. The rest is history! He asked me to marry him a few months later and we were married on November 10, 2012 in the LDS Oquirrh Mountain Temple, exactly seven months after he was home from the mission.
